Wow... Who would have thought that February would have so much to offer?

During the month of February, you can register to win an MP3 player for offering your feedback on our display upstairs... ask if you need help finding it. What do we want to know? Just write in what page-turner you loved from 2011 and what book you look forward to reading in 2012.

Take advantage of our Book a Librarian program and enjoy a one-on-one session specifically designed for your needs. Got seeds? It’s time to start thinking about planting.
This year, the Hubbard Public Library is holding a seed swap, an opportunity for you to try growing something new or different, from other gardener’s saved seed. During the last two weeks of February, the library will have a seed display for all our local seedgeeks – bring in any extra seed left from your last two gardening years. Flower seeds as well as vegetable seeds are welcome. A volunteer will organize the seed you bring – please label your seeds clearly, it is especially useful if you know both the common and the botanical names. Then the first two weeks in March, come back in to see what was donated, and see what you might want to sample for your 2012 garden. This could be the first of an annual event – let’s see what we can grow!

About Eva Schloss, in her own words:
"I was born in Vienna, Austria in 1929. As our family was Jewish, we immigrated to Belgium and eventually to Hollandin 1938, shortly after Hitler annexed Austria. After the Germans invaded Holland in 1942, our family went into hiding. In May 1944, we were betrayed, captured by the Nazis and sent to Auschwitz-Birkenau death camp. The whole point of the process wad the de-humanization of us. When we were liberated by the Russians and they shared their bread and water with us, I cried. That was a kind, human action.

Only my Mother and I survived. My father and brother did not. My mother and I were liberated by the Russian army in January 1945 and evacuated eastward into Russia, as fighting was still going on to the west. In May 1945, we were repatriated to Amsterdam."

Have an ereader? Reading ebooks on your laptop, iPad, or phone? Not sure what to download next? You go to the library for book suggestions and reference questions, but where do you go when you need ebook suggestions? Hubbard Public Library, of course!

We will be offering ebook reviews here on our blog monthly. You will be able to learn more about the book, its author, and each review will include multiple ways for you to access the book.

As always, your comments and questions are welcome. Let us know when you read a title and if you agree or disagree with the review. Are we neglecting your favorite genre? Tell us!

What are your back to school plans?

It's back to school time again. I know, groans from children; cheers from parents. You have school supplies to gather, new shoes and that perfect first day outfit to worry about, but what about the library? Will you be using the library to get ready for school?

How can the library assist with back to school? Let me count the ways:

1. Review material a few weeks before school starts again.
       The library offers free computer access to everything from elementary school review on Learning Express to foreign langauge skill reviews on Mango and Byki language databases. Simply visit our website at http://www.beyond-books.org/ and click on Reference and Research on the tab in the menu at the left.

2. Let a good audiobook lull you to sleep early so you can practice that 6 am wake up call.
        You can come in and check out an audiobook or click this link http://ohdbks.lib.overdrive.com/. Sign in with your library card, choose an audiobook, and you can listen to it via computer or transfer to your
own MP3 Player. You can even burn some of the audiobooks to CD for convenient use!

3. Finish all that summer reading so you aren't stressed out.
         You can go to our website, search for a book, and click on "REQUEST HOLD". Then put in your library card number and the book will be requested for you. You can also renew books while you are
signed in. We'll call you when the book is ready to be picked up! Even better, call us at 330.534.3512 and change your notifications to TEXT- we'll text you when your book comes in. No more checking
answering machine- or hoping whomever checked it gives you the message!

4. Re-connect with your friends.
         Has it been a while since you've seen anyone from school? Hang out at the library with them. There are tons of fun things to do, no matter what age you are. The children's room still has plenty of programs going on and the teens meet every Thursday at 3pm. Join the fun!

5. Rebel (a little).
         Ask us about our "Of Misfits and Mayhem: Banned Books Read Out". Enjoy a banned or challenged book while supporting the teen services of the library. A great event for the entire family!

This Saturday, August 6 from 11-4 pm join us for our mini anime convention. Panels will include everything from an introduction to Japanese fashion to the world of furry fandom.

You can listen to a panel, participate in Yu-gi-oh or Pokemon Tournaments, read manga, or view different anime features in our screening room.

All activities will be run by our YAC@HPL (Young Adult Council at Hubbard Public Library) teen volunteers, who have done an incredible job organizing the event.

Join us this weekend at the Hubbard Fun Fest!

Starting Friday evening, you can visit your favorite library employees at the library table. Bring your iPod/MP3 player and cord (and library card) and you can download audiobooks right there at the Fun Fest!! Don't have a library card? Bring a photo ID with your current Ohio address and sign up for your free library card! Are you reading this from PA and tempted to come sign up for a card? There is a $20 fee for out of state residents unless you work or go to school in Ohio (bring a copy of your pay stub or school document and ID)- then you and your immediate family at the same residence are eligible for a free card! Already have a library card? Show us and spin to win! You can even check out a library book while you are at the Fun Fest!

Have little ones who are attending with you? Stop by the table to see when our Furry Friends will be available for pictures! Simon is even stopping by. A schedule will be posted each day. Free photos will be available to pick up at the library the following week.

Wondering if there is anything for teens to do? Of course! Our YAC@HPL teens will be available to tell you why they LOVE coming to the library! They will also be running mini Wii tournaments for your entertainment.

Just be careful! Watch the parade Saturday at 5pm with caution, because we plan to dazzle you with our expert moves! You'll have to watch us to find out why!

Show, Tell, and Win!

Did you hear about our new contest? Show and Tell what you downloaded with your library card from our website using Overdrive and you could win an iPod shuffle! Come in with the device or a picture of the downloaded item on your computer screen , show it to someone at the ref desk, and receive an entry into our drawing! Hurry- ends June 27!

Simply visit our website at www.beyond-books.org. Click on the <DOWNLOAD> graphic in the bottom right corner of the screen. It will take you to the Ohio eBooks Project site, where we are collaborative members with many additional libraries. You will need to download additional software: Adobe Editions and Overdrive Media Console to use your downloads. (When you download Adobe Editions, please make sure you follow the prompts to register the device with an Adobe Id or you will not be able to transfer ebooks.)

Search for the item you want to download, making sure that the format is compatible with the device you are using, and click add to cart. Sign in, check out your cart, and be on your way!

The YA Controversy: Too Dark or Relevant to Teenage Life?

There is a war scaling right now as to whether or not YA fiction is Too Dark. One side says that books like Wintergirls by Laurie Halse Anderson trigger self harm and The Hunger Games is inappropriate because it is hyper-violent.

I know you have been waiting for this post all weekend... how can you read our Tweets? There are two different ways: you can join Twitter or you can access the tweets from our website.

To join twitter, you visit www.twitter.com and create an account using your email address. You can then access your settings and sign up for Twitter Mobile, which will allow you to tweet and read tweets from your phone. Just make sure you follow HPLBeyondBooks to get all of our information. You can then decide if you want to follow others and whether or not you want to tweet some messages yourself.

Not interested in sending out your own tweets or signing up for Twitter? That's ok, you can still read our tweets by visiting our homepage at www.beyond-books.org and clicking on the Twitter link. It will list all of our tweets for you.

I Want to Know Everything, Part 2

So this week our focus is keeping up to date with the library through Facebook. There are very few people who are indifferent about Facebook, for most it is a love/hate relationship: you love it or you hate it. Fortunately, no matter how you feel about Facebook you can still read our status updates and always know what is going on.

If you have a Facebook account, you can simply search for Hubbard Public Library by typing it in the search bar just above where you do you status updates. Be sure you have the correct page by looking for our Beyond Books logo. Then just click on "like" and you will receive our status updates. You will also be able to "like" or comment on our posts... and please do! We love feedback!

Don't want a Facebook account but still want access to the information we post on Facebook? Simply follow these steps:
1. Go to www.beyond-books.org
2. Click on the Facebook logo
3. Read the status updates
You can access all the information without having to sign up for Facebook. You won't be able to comment on the posts or "like" a status, but you can still follow our posts.

I want to know everything!

It's true. When the school was closed last week, I wanted to be the first to know so I could tell all of you. When there is a new program that I am interested in, I definitely don't want to find out after it happened. How do you keep up with all that info that is out there without sitting in front of a computer and letting life pass you by?
Over the next few weeks, I will tell you how to get info from the library without having to be tied to your computer. This week, I will tell you about unlimited texting. Next week, I will explain how to view our Facebook posts with or without signing up for Facebook, and after that, will see what news a little birdie can tell you with Twitter.

First, unlimited text. I found out about the school being closed even though my children aren't in this school district through a local news station and their text notification option. I can choose several school districts and they will email me as soon as a delay or cancellation is reported. Unlimited text is a nice feature and can be use to receive Facebook updates, Tweets... you can even be notified that a book you placed on hold is available to be picked up at the library!

So how do you get library information with unlimited text? First, you let us know that you want to change the way you receive your notifications. Rather than a phone call to say your book is in, a text notification will tell you the title of the book and will text you as soon as it arrives. Remember all those times you spent all afternoon running around doing errands just to come home and get a message that your book is in? Our text notification will let you know you book is in no matter where you happen to be at the time. You can also get your overdue notices by text- I can't tell you how much money that could save me in fines!

The other ways to utilize your unlimited text involve Twitter and Facebook. Both of these social networking tools allow notifications to be sent to you by text. You can sign up for Facebook and receive our posts by text simply by adjusting your settings. Not sure how? Email me at amy@beyond-books and I will help you work it out.

Twitter also has an option that allows you to sign up for text notification. Just "follow" HPLBeyondBooks and change your notifications to text. Email me with questions and I will help you change your settings.

It's Contest Time!

You read about Preservation Week in our last blog post (right?) so here is our contest info:
First, come to the library. Really. Not come Monday at 2 or Wednesday at 5 - come in when its convenient for you as long as we are open.

The display will be near the entrance to the Teen room (where the movies are).
Pick up a copy of the Scavenger Hunt Form. Take said form to the reference desk and ask the reference librarian for the microfilm stated on the form.

Have you used a microfilm reader lately? No? That's why the contest requires you to use it. Librarians LIVE to teach you new things, so let them. No need to be shy, I don't know how to work it either.

Look for the answers to the questions on the form, answer them, then turn the form and the microfilm in to the reference librarian. (Don't forget to put your name and number on it)

All the correct entries will go into a drawing for a prize.

12 year old, Samantha Neral, of Brookfield can not wait to do this contest and repeatedly asks, "When can I do that microfilm thing? Today? Or is it an 'adults only' thing I can't do?"

Well, Samantha, the good news is it is an all ages contest. Ages 13 and under have to have supervision with the machine, but you can enter the contest.... just not til Monday!

Time to learn more about preservation... and win!

April 24-30 is Preservation Week! From the American Library Association: Some 630 million items in collecting institutions require immediate attention and care. Eighty percent of these institutions have no paid staff assigned responsibility for collections care; 22 percent have no collections care personnel at all. Some 2.6 billion items are not protected by an emergency plan. As natural disasters of recent years have taught us, these resources are in jeopardy should a disaster strike. Personal, family, and community collections are equally at risk. ALA encourages libraries and other institutions to use Preservation Week to connect our communities through events, activities, and resources that highlight what we can do, individually and together, to preserve our personal and shared collections.

So what are we going to do about it? Have a contest, of course!
The week of April 24 thru 30 celebrate the wonderful world of microfilm by coming into the library and requesting a copy of our MICROFILM SCAVENGER HUNT participation sheet. You will then receive a reel of microfilm and a list of questions to answer. Don't know how to use the microfilm machine? That's what the contest is all about! Learn how to use the machine, fill in your answers, and all the correct answer sheets will be entered into a drawing for a prize (to be announced).

TAG... you're it?

TAG is the Tweens' Activity Group that meets every two weeks. Creative activities are planned by our extraordinary children's room librarians...Mary Anne, Nancy and Dana. This week the tweens created artwork from Twinkies (yum).

Mary Anne, Children's Librarian Supervisor, believes the key to fostering creativity in children is to let them explore their own ideas. Rather than provide a sample of what a finished product looks like, Mary Anne explains the concept and then allows the tweens to tap into their inner creativity by producing a work of art that is truly their own and not a rendition of an interpretation someone else shared. (She applies this to all the art activities she does with children of all ages, preschool to adult).

It's almost time! Sunday, April 10 from 1- 4pm join us for an interactive, hands-on afternoon at the library.

Start your afternoon off by swinging by the Historical Society's McBride House for a tour. The Historical Society and the Hubbard Public Library are partnering up this year. In recognition of the library theme, "Create your own Story at your library", the Historical Society will be offering materials free of charge to get you started compiling your own family history. There will also be adorable home shaped tags to pick up at both the McBride House and the library. Get your tag punched at the McBride House and then bring it to the library and have it punched here and you will be entered into a drawing for a prize.

Speaking of prizes, you get an entry into the library basket raffle just by walking in the door! Not feeling lucky enough to win with just one entry? For every demonstration you visit, you receive another entry! Simon? Where are you?

Have you met Simon? He is an adorable mouse who likes to appear every once in a while for events where very sweet, adorable young children come to see the incredibly gifted, unbelievably delightful librarians from the children's department. You may have even spotted him at Family Night in the company of some of our YAC@HPL teen volunteers (YAC@HPL= Young Adult Council at Hubbard Public Library.)

There is a little rumor I heard recently that Simon loved the children who attended Family Night so much that he is looking for them. He has searched the library day and night trying to find the same children he saw last time. While he was wandering, he realized that there are a lot of little kids that Simon has seen over the years. He is feeling a little sentimental and would like those children who really, really like seeing him to find him and give him a BIG hug.

However, we never really know when Simon is going to be wandering around. He could be at Babytime, YAC@HPL Book Club, or even show up at our new Anime Club meeting... you never know. See if you can find him. Watch the library calendar of events and see if his name pops up... or, maybe if we wish really hard, someone from the children's department will let us know when Simon is going to be looking for a hug again... Hubbard Public Library Now Offers Downloadable Audiobooks, eBooks, Music, and Video!

           Hubbard Public Library has expanded its services to include eBooks, audiobooks, digital music, and digital video. The library’s new digital media content is available to download at anytime from the library’s website through the Ohio eBook Project. Library card holders can check out and download digital media by visiting www.beyondbooks.org. This new service is free for Hubbard Library patrons with their library card. Patrons browse the Ohio eBook Project’s website, check out materials with a valid library card, and then download content to a PC, Mac®, or other mobile devices. Titles can be enjoyed immediately or transferred to a variety of devices, including iPod®, NOOK™, Sony® Reader™, and many others, for on-the-go listening and reading. Titles will automatically expire at the end of the lending period so there are no late fees! Visit the reference desk at the Library to find out if your eReader or mp3 player is
compatible with OverDrive Media.

            Learn how to download ebooks, audiobooks, digital music and digital video with OverDrive Media by attending a class at the library. Class size is limited, so advance registration is required. There is no fee, but a flash-drive is recommended to save information. Flash-drives are available for purchase from The Friends of the Hubbard Public Library at the reference desk. Call the Library at 330-534-3512, Ext. 3 to register for a class. There are several sessions scheduled in the coming weeks. To see a list of class times and dates or to get started downloading audiobooks, eBooks, and more, visit www.beyond-books.org.

         The Ohio eBook Project is a state-wide consortium that provides a shared collection of downloadable eBooks, audiobooks, music and video to member libraries across Ohio. Member libraries, including Hubbard Public Library, purchase content that is shared collectively to all participating libraries. Established in 2005, the Ohio eBook Project is funded in part by LSTA funds awarded by the Institute of Museum and Library Services to the State Library of Ohio.

I have been hearing rumors about the open house again. It is going to be Sunday, April 10 from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm.The library will be open for you to sign up for a library card, check out demonstrations, and meet all of the wonderful people who are here every day to make your library experiences run smoothly and effortlessly. There will be no checking out of materials during the open house... we want you to have an opportunity to mingle with all the staff that day and to enjoy the activities.

Here is an interesting fact about Daylight Saving Time
(yes, I say savings too, but I'm being educated by my library.)

"Daylight Saving or Savings?
The official spelling is Daylight Saving Time, not Daylight Savings Time. Saving is used as a verbal adjective -- a participle. It modifies time and tells us more about its nature; namely, that it is characterized by the activity of saving daylight. It is a saving daylight kind of time. Because of this, it would be more accurate to refer to DST as daylight-saving time. Similar examples would be a mind-expanding book or a man-eating tiger. Saving is used in the same way as saving a ball game, rather than as a savings account. Nevertheless, many people feel the word savings -- with an "s" -- flows more mellifluously off the tongue. Daylight Savings Time is also in common usage, and can be found in dictionaries. Adding to the confusion is that the phrase Daylight Saving Time is inaccurate, since no daylight is actually saved. Daylight Shifting Time would be better, and Daylight Time Shifting more accurate, but neither are politically desirable."

Guess what is coming soon... the library open house! I am not revealing any specific details about the day -of activities yet, but I want to make sure you are the first to know.

The open house will be Sunday, April 10 from 1-4 pm. I can't wait to see everyone come out and learn about all the new opportunities that are available: computer classes, ebooks, audio book downloads, craft classes, the return of family nights in the children's department.... and more!

I will let you know more when I know more- so keep checking the blog and stay up to date with all the latest news!

It's true! The exciting new program we've been waiting for launched at 10 am this very morning. You can now download ebooks, audio books, and video with your Hubbard Public Library card! This feature can be accessed from our website at http://www.beyond-books.org/. Simply locate the download graphic on the far right side of the homepage and click on it. It will take you to the Ohio eBooks Project where you can look for books to download.

OverDrive Media classes are being offered beginning March 5 for patrons who are interested in learning more about how to use the program or how to move the downloaded item from their computer to an ereader or MP3 player. Our goal is to assist you as much as possible, so we highly recommend attending on of our classes. You can register for a class by calling the circulation desk at 330.534.3512.

Watch out blog for updates all week to learn more about OverDrive Media, the Ohio eBooks Project, and how you can get the maximum use of this service.

YAC@HPL 4 u? 4 me?

What is YAC@HPL? It stands for Young Adult Council at Hubbard Public Library and serves teens ages 13-18. The council is currently working on establishing teen programs and teen volunteering opportunities at the library.

One of the newest teen programs that YAC@HPL has created is the Anime Club. This group begins meeting on Thursday, March 10 from 3:00 - 5:00 pm, and will continue to meet at that time the second Thursday of each month. The Anime Club will also feature Japanese culture, Manga, occasional cosplay, and additional activities.

YAC@HPL will also meet the fourth Thursday of every month for the YAC@HPL Book Club, affectionately referred to as a "not your mother's" style book club; meaning that there will be technological aspects that are not found in typical adult book clubs. Keep an eye here on the blog and check our website occasionally (www.beyond-books.com) to learn more as the book group unfolds. The first meeting on March 24 will help establish which books will be read each month. Book selection will be made by the group and all teens all welcome.

So, YAC@HPL is the new teen programming at the library. If you are a teen, please join us. If you are not a teen, please refer one.If you have programming suggestions for teens, please comment and share them.

Because We Care...

At Hubbard Public Library, we care. We care about our patrons. We care about our community. We care about you. In light of the winter weather that has passed through Northern Ohio this winter, we want to express how much we care about where you are Saturday, Feb . 19.

We hope that you will join us for a blood drive during the hours of 10:30 am to 2:30 pm. The foul winter weather caused the cancellation of 18 blood drives, resulting in a shortage of over 600 pints of blood. This could affect nearly 1800 patients in Northern Ohio.
